LeafBound Help Center

How can we help?

Answers for every part of LeafBound, from your first import to the files you send the printer, and a person to write to when you need one.

Getting started

Install LeafBound, bring in a manuscript and make your first export.

What do I need to run LeafBound?

A PC with Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit. LeafBound is a native Windows app, so nothing runs in a browser. A Mac version is in development.

How do I bring in my manuscript?

Choose Import and pick a Word (.docx) file, or start a new book and write in LeafBound. Chapters, headings, footnotes, images and emphasis come across, and you can export back to an editable .docx at any time.

What does the free trial include?

Everything, including the Academic tools, for 14 days. Exports made during the trial carry a short “Made with a LeafBound trial” line so you can proof real files. Your books stay on your PC when the trial ends.

How do I make my first print PDF and ebook?

Pick a theme, check the live preview, run Print Preflight for your printer, then choose Export. Print comes first, so ebook editions can carry page numbers that match it.

Account and activation

Activate a PC, move to a new one, and work offline.

How do I activate LeafBound?

Open LeafBound and choose Sign in. Your browser opens your LeafBound account; approve the PC with the code the app shows. LeafBound then stores a licence on that PC and works offline.

How do I move LeafBound to a new computer?

In your LeafBound account, choose Disconnect device next to the old PC, then sign in from LeafBound on the new one. A disconnected PC that is offline loses access the next time it connects.

Does LeafBound work offline?

Yes. After the first activation it keeps working without an internet connection, indefinitely.

What does LeafBound send over the internet?

Only what licensing and updates need: the PC’s name and a device key when you connect it, and licence and update checks when you are online. Your manuscripts, images and exports are never uploaded.

If I uninstall LeafBound, are my books deleted?

No. Uninstalling removes the program files only. Your books, preferences and licence stay on the PC unless you delete them.

Design and themes

Themes, editions, fonts and comparing designs.

How many themes are there?

28, and each comes in Standard, Large print and Accessible editions. Every theme sets its own typefaces, chapter openings, first-paragraph treatment, scene-break ornament and running heads.

Can I use my own fonts?

Yes. Import a font you are licensed to use; LeafBound checks its embedding permission before it goes into a PDF or ebook. 55 font families come bundled.

Can I compare designs before I choose?

Compare themes sets your opening pages in up to three designs side by side and shows how the page count changes.

Print and preflight

KDP and IngramSpark checks, PDF/X and proof copies.

What does Print Preflight check?

Preflight reads the finished PDF and checks 24 rules for your printer profile: trim size, inside margin for your page count, outer margins, bleed, text inside the safe area, minimum text and line sizes, image resolution, embedded fonts, colour, transparency and blank pages. Many results have a one-click fix. See the KDP and IngramSpark guides.

Which PDF standard should I export?

PDF/X-1a:2001 for black-and-white interiors and PDF/X-3:2002 for colour. Choose the profile for your printer and LeafBound picks the right one.

Will the printer accept my file?

Preflight applies the published rules, but the distributor makes the final decision when you upload. Order a printed proof before you publish; that is good advice with any tool.

Ebooks

Store editions, accessibility and uploading.

Which ebook files does LeafBound make?

A generic EPUB 3 (or EPUB 2) plus editions for Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, Nook and Google Play, each with its own store links.

Are the ebooks accessible?

Every edition carries EPUB Accessibility 1.1 metadata, semantic structure, reading order and a page list that matches print. LeafBound asks for any missing image descriptions before it exports.

How do I upload to Kindle?

Upload the Kindle edition EPUB in KDP; Amazon converts it for Kindle devices. The Kindle formatting guide walks through it.

Orders, updates and refunds

Pricing, licences, updates and refunds.

Is LeafBound a subscription?

No. You pay once for the current major version (for example 1.x). Minor updates within that version are free and install themselves. A future major version is a separate, optional purchase.

How do updates work?

When LeafBound is online it checks for updates within your major version, downloads them in the background and verifies each one before it installs. Your books are not touched by an update.

How many computers can I use?

Each licence activates one Windows PC at a time. Disconnect the old PC in your LeafBound account to move it.

How do I ask for a refund?

Email LeafBound support with your order email and what went wrong. Every request is reviewed individually by a person.
